Winterization: Getting Your Property Ready for Winter

With the weather finally turning colder here in East Central Indiana, it's time to make sure properties are ready for winter. If a property is occupied then this isn't usually a problem as tenatns keep the heat on and water running regularly through the course of living in the unit. This really is more about vacant properties and making sure that water pipes don’t freeze as the cost of repair and clean-up once things thaw out is an expensive headache.

If the unit is expected to be vacant through the winter we recommend full winterization for the unit. Simply, this includes:
  • contacting utility companies and turning off all the utilities
  • draining all water from the house system and replacing it with RV anti-freeze
If the unit is not fully weatherized the heat needs to be left on between 50-60 degrees to keep the water in the pipes from freezing.

If the unit is going to remain vacant it an stay weatherized all year round. If it is going to be occupied the utilities can be turned back on and the anti-freeze can be flushed from the system.

If you have a vacant unit and are unsure what's best to do, contact your property manager to discuss these options. And, if you don't have a property manager please remember that Renaissance Properties offers the highest quality property management services. Check us out.
